This week our 1590 WAKR Male Student Athlete of the Week is senior football player Ben Lahoski from Woodridge High School.

Ben says football has always been a family thing for him growing up and all the way into his senior season.

“My grandpa played, my dad played, and it’s just always been a part of me,” he said.

Ben’s coach Jeff Decker says that he is one of the smartest players he’s ever been around.

"He is an outright team leader,” Decker explained.

“All of the kids look to him, and he’s the hardest worker and he knows every position on offense and defense if we asked him to play it.”

Ben plays linebacker on defense and serves as a running back on offense.

He’s a two-sport athlete playing both football and basketball at Woodridge. One of the unique aspects is playing on Lahoski Field, named after his grandfather.

Away from the field, he’s a member of the National Honor Society and is active in the community as well.

Upon graduation in the spring, Ben is undecided on where he is going to school, but plans on majoring in Business.

Our next Female Student Athlete of the Week is Sarah Abood, a junior volleyball player from Woodridge High School.

She says that she got the love for volleyball in middle school and stuck with it ever since.

“i originally got it from my grade school at IHM (Immaculate Heart of Mary in Cuyahoga Falls), and we started out with CYO and then I got into travel volleyball and tried out for the high school team," she said.

Her coach Katie Cicione says that Sarah is a true leader both on and off the court.

“Sarah is one of the most hard working athletes that we have within our program,” she says.

“Every day  she strives to be the best version of herself possible for her teammates, constantly asking questions and always the first person one of our underclassmen go to.”

Among her many activities and clubs s, one of the most notable is the Woodridge Athlete Leadership Council.

She says that the number of athletes encouraging and helping one another is critical to success on and away from the playing field.

“I enjoy being a part of that club, it pushes me to be a better leader every day," she explained.

We wish Ben and Sarah all the best in their future endeavors.

Our 1590 WAKR Male Student Athlete of the Week is Caden Scarbrough , a  junior golfer from CVCA.

He says he got into the sport of golf at an early age.

“My Dad is really big into golf, so he’s just been with me pretty much my whole life, just being involved in golf, so my dad got me hooked on golf,” he said.

Caden said that the family atmosphere at CVCA has helped him both on and off the golf course, enriching his experience as both an athlete and a student.

“The teachers here are nice and are there to help you any way they can,” he said.

His head coach says that he is one of those kids that makes others around him better.

"Caden is extremely committed in making his teammates better in all areas of their lives, says coach Jon Bucciarelli.

Scarbrough says that he models his game after PGA golfer Justin Thomas, who may be smaller in stature, like he is, but can drive the ball a good distance.

“He’s really awesome to watch,” Scarbrough said with a smile.

Head Golf Coach Jon Bucciarelli says that Caden is a student athlete in every aspect of the term.

"Caden is truly the leader of our golf team in every aspect," he says. "His work ethic, integrity, and spiritual discipline resonates with his fellow teammates and opponents."

Our next Female Student Athlete of the Week is junior Payton Fraley a soccer player from CVCA High School.

She says working with her coaches and teammates is something she truly enjoys.

“Its just amazing environment,” she explained. “We strive to be better every single day,” she said.

Payton points to a leadership class she’s currently taking at CVCA this fall that is giving her the tools she needs to lead on the pitch.

“You have to represent yourself and you don’t always have to be vocal, you can do it through your actions and how you love others,” she said.

Head Coach Courtney Wagner had this to say about the junior;

"Payton is wonderful kid and a tremendous teammate. She brings lots of joy and energy to the team," she explained.

"She represents the Royals very well and we are excited to see her continue to grow."

Payton says she got the love of the game of soccer from her older brothers, who also played the sport.

“I was always hanging out with them and I always wanted to play.”

Outside of her leadership class, Fraley’s favorite subject is math.

We wish Caden and Payton the best in all of their future endeavors.

Ray Horner Podcast - 8/28/2019

:19 - Popeyes Chicken is throwing down the gauntlet in the sandwich game, competing directly with the likes of Wendy’s and Chick-Fil-A. Have you tried it? Good luck, because if they’re not all sold out, the lines for these chicken sandwiches are massive.

4:41 - Jerry Craig is the executive director of the ADM Board in Summit County, and he stopped by the studio to talk about all the services the board does in our community. Also joining Jerry was Gizelle Jones with VANTAGE Aging.

11:33 - Remember your teen years? Ever wish you can go back to those *fairly* innocent days? Days with no bills and not many responsibilities?

16:40 - The final preseason game for the Cleveland Browns is mercifully this Thursday, and final cuts will be happening soon. Fred Greetham from the Orange & Brown Report came on to recap last week’s pedestrian performance by Baker Mayfield, and he takes a gander at the roster as well.
