This week our 1590 WAKR Female Student Athlete of the Week is Samantha Huth, a senior golfer from Archbishop Hoban High School.

She says that her father got her interested in the game of golf at an early age and she carries that appreciation for the game to this day.

“My dad was a golfer and he's been around it his whole life, and when I was trying to figure out what sports work best for me, I started taking lessons at 9 and have been at it ever since," she said.

Huth says the family atmosphere at Hoban extends beyond the golf course for her.

"Since my freshman year at Hoban, it's honestly been amazing," she said. "The best part about it is just the fact that you can say hi to anyone here and be automatic friends."

In 2019, she was named the captain of the girls golf team, lettered for the fourth year in a row, and was a second place medalist at the NCL Championship earning first team honors.

Her coach Ben Wehmann said that she is a great example for the girls on the golf team and an exemplary student athlete.

In my eight years coaching, Sam stands out among a select few as one of the most motivated individuals I have ever had," he said. "The other girls looked up to her and respected her not only as an excellent golfer but as a leader and a friend and her dedication to the sport was obvious as she was often found outside of team practice working on her game with her dad and teammates."

Away from the course, Huth is a student ambassador, a member of the National Honor Society, and a Peer Mentor.

In the community, she volunteers at Common Threads and also at Summit County Animal Control.

Upon graduation in the spring, she plans on attending Clarion University to study nursing.

Our next Male Student Athlete is Dylan Farah, a senior soccer player from Archbishop Hoban.

He says soccer has been a big part of his life from an early age.

"My older brothers got me into it and ever since I can remember I've had a ball at my feet," he said.

2019 was a solid one for him as he scored 9 goals and had three assists his senior season. He was also named to the NCL First Team and was named GASCA Akron District Honorable Mention.

His coach Tavi Muresan says he is a leader in every aspect of his life.

He is an excellent soccer player who always plays with an outstanding passion at a high level," he explains . "He was one of our most dynamic and unpredictable attacking players who played a vital role in helping Hoban Knights to win North Coast League on three times in his soccer career."

Muresan went on to say he's as good of a young man as he is a soccer player.

"Dylan was a great role model for all our players playing almost all his senior year with an ACL injury , scored important winning goals and showed immense character."

Away from the pitch, he is a student ambassador, a member of the National Honor Society, the French Club, and a member of the Super Fan club.

In the community, he volunteers for the All Star Training Club and South Street Ministries.

Dylan says both of those opportunities are rewarding for him in unique ways.

“”
Upon graduation in the spring of 2020, he plans on attending The Ohio State University majoring in Finance.

We wish Samantha and Dylan the best in all of their future endeavors.

Cathy Rudolph was living in her Long Island home when she, like millions of others, fell in love with the talents of comedic actor Paul Lynde. But unlike the vast majority of those viewers, she made it a point to meet the man and create a friendship in the years before his untimely demise in 1982.

WAKR's Tony Mazur talked in-depth with Cathy Rudolph, author of the book Paul Lynde: A Biography; His Life, His Loves & His Laughter. Cathy and Tony went back and fourth about Paul's early life and career, his long and entertaining tenure on Hollywood Squares, his struggles with alcohol and sexuality throughout the 1970s, and why he felt his career never took off the way he imagined.

Paul is a native of Mount Vernon, Ohio, and he is buried just north of the town on the Lynde family plot.

She also does some volunteer work for the Ladies First program which she was a part of as a youngster.

She says that most of her teammates were part of that program and having that camaraderie and chemistry leads to success at the high school level.

His coach, former Buchtel Griffins alum and former UA Zips basketball player Matt Futch says that the junior gives his best both on and off the court.

“He has a leadership quality to him, and we’ve been working to have him bring that out and lead the group,” he says.

“He’s got a good sense of humor, good kid to be around, he’s responsible, and takes care of his business.”

He says the bond with his teammates is one that will extend long beyond their playing days.

“I just know they got my back andI got their back forever no matter what it is on or off the court,” he explained.

This week our 1590 WAKR Female Student Athlete of the Week is Alison Zupancic, a junior volleyball player from Firestone.

Alison says that she likes the family and team aspect of playing volleyball with her teammates and friends.

In 2019 she was chosen as the Player of the Year at Firestone and earning that award was a testament to her hard work.

“It showed me that I really am giving a lot to the team and how much I’m putting in is being received,” she said.

Also in 2019, she was named as the 2019 top setter, named to the All City Academic Team, and was named First Team All City amongst other awards and honors.

She explained that being a Firestone student athlete is a great experience all around.

“I think everybody on the team is there to have a good time and to win and put everything out there,” Alison said.

Coach Stacey Evans said she is the epitome of a student athlete.

“She carries above a 4.0 while serving as a team captain,” she said.

“Ally is not only skilled on the court, having earned 1st Team All City, but she is caring, helpful, responsible, and principled.”

Off the court, she volunteers at the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank and also helps with different elementary and middle school programs in athletics and other activities.

Alison is also involved in the arts program at Firestone in addition to being a student athlete for the Falcons.

Our next Male Student Athlete of the Week is Clay Peets, a junior cross country runner from Firestone.

He says that even though it’s an individual sport, the team aspect is present at all times.

“We’re all brothers,” he said.

“We all push each other, whether we’re running on the Towpath or running a speed workout on the track we try to push ourselves to not only bring success individually, but as a team.”

This year, Clay qualified for the state meet in Hebron, Ohio and was also named City Series Champion, Academic All Ohio, and was a team MVP.

Aaron Varner, Clay’s coach, said that his work ethic sets him apart

“He’s a great young man, he’s driven, he’s focused, and he’s a great leader for our team,” he said.

“Clay’s done something that hasn’t been done at Firestone since 1985, and that’s qualify for the state meet and that speaks to his work ethic and his leadership.”

Away from the cross country trails, Clay is involved in the engineering program at Firestone and is a member of YoungLife, a Christian youth group in the area.

We wish Alison and Clay the best in all of their future endeavors.
