1590 WAKR Student Athlete of the Week: Matthew Smoley

Written by
This week, our 1590 WAKR Male Student Athlete of the Week is junior wrestler Matt Smoley from Ellet High School.

Matt, who wrestles in the 170-pound class, says he started wrestling in his younger days, and he's stuck with it ever since.

As a captain on the wrestling team for the Orangemen this year, he says his role is that of a vocal leader, and leading by example as well, something he takes seriously.

“I try to set a good example for our younger kids and our freshmen, and try to keep everyone on track,” Smoley explained.

Ellet is back-to-back City Series wrestling champions under the direction of coach Mark Hayhurst.

Smoley, a two-sport athlete in both football and wrestling knows balancing academics and athletics is of the utmost importance.

“Our coaches are very supportive and are always trying to help us with our schoolwork,” he said.

Matt says he plans on wrestling in college in a couple of years, and he says he's focused on getting to the city championships, as well as getting himself and more of his teammates to the District Tournament.

We here at 1590 WAKR wish Matt the best in his future endeavors.
